HD Aquaponics Ep. 22 – Barrel aquaponics maintenance, floating raft , DWC, planting

HD Aquaponics Ep. 22

This week we did some maintenance on the barrel aquaponics system. The pump has become clogged with fish waste so we clean out the filter and use that fish waste to fertilize some of the tomato plants.

Loose video transcript:
Ahh bummer, one of the tilapia died. Looks like I’ll have to fish him out of the backyard aquaponics greenhouse system and add some for tilapia.

So the barrel aquaponics, barrelponics, aquaponic, isn’t running too well right now. I’m sure that the bio filter, pump, is clogged with tilapia waste and hasn’t been cleaned in a long time. I’m going to take this backyard aquaponic, barrelponics, barrel aquaponics apart, clean the bio filter that’s inside the pump and show you what we’re going to do with it.

Alright, so I’ve shut the backyard aquaponic, barrel aquaponics system down and I’m going to remove the recirc line and pull the pump out of the fish tank.

So I’ve added some water to bucket here, I have the fish tank pump sitting out here so I’m going to dismantle this pump and go from there.

Okay, so I’m going to remove the cover from this aquaponics pump. So you can see inside of there, the bio filter is just full of mud, fish waste, bacteria and nitrates so we’ll take this bio filter out and place it in our clean water.

(I’m cleaning the bio filter. Removing the fish waste trapped inside the filter.)

Now that I’ve got this fish waste water sitting here I don’t want to waste this fish waste water so I’m going to pour it in the tomato plant container. So I’ll dump the water in and feed this plant.

This might be a little difficult to pour with one hand but I’ll give it a shot. I don’t want to waste any, that’s full so I’ll let that soak in and pour in some more.

So I’m going to finish cleaning this aquaponic pump using the hose inside the bucket so I don’t waste any of the nutrient for the plants.

Alright, so I got the aquaponic pump all put back together. All I need to do now is reconnect the recirc line and start up the backyard aquaponics, barrelponics, barrel aquaponics system.

So now that the fish tank pump and bio filter has been cleaned out you can see the hefty water flow, more than what I want flowing into the aquaponics grow bed to initiate the bell siphon. I’ll have to readjust the aquaponic system, barrelponics, barrel aquaponics system. It looks like it’s going to be running just fine.

Alright, so that was definitely the problem with the aquaponic system. After adjusting, the aquaponics system is running great, I topped off the fish tank with some water and you can see the goldfish down inside the tank. They’re doing really good. So that’s it, just maintenance on the barrel aquaponic, barrelponics, backyard aquaponics system.

So we’re going to clean this hydroton, this expanded clay and we’re going to fill in the last nine or so holes in the floating raft, DWC, grow bed. The first thing I’m going to do is clean this hydroton.

It’s a little dark, so I don’t know if you can see the algae growing growing in there but I’m going to ad the hydroponics grow baskets.

So now that’s it not 110 degrees inside the the aquaponics greenhouse and the sun has gone down, I’m going to try something a little different and not use the pods to start the seedlings inside the floating raft, dwc grow bed. Some plants don’t really mind it in aquaponics, aquaponic, as you can see. Other plants don’t seem to like it very much and I think that’s what is going on with these eggplants. I think the grow pods are just keeping the roots soaked and we’re not see a lot of growth. So I’m going to take this second floating raft and I’m going to plant this spring mix, these seeds. So what I’m going to do is move this hydroton and find some damp clay beads, put some seeds in and see if they come up. If they do, great, if not we’ll go back to using the grow pods.

Okay some I’m just going to move some of this hydroton out of the way and find some damp one, and now I’m just going to throw a few seeds down there and see if anything comes up. These seeds are very small so i’m not sure if they will but we’re going to give it a try and see what happens.

So this is the last one, I’m just going to put some seeds down, cover them up and we’ll see what happens in a week or so.
